ROCHESTER, NEW YORK (July 13, 2025) – The USA Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF) is delighted to congratulate Dr. Caroline M. Solomon, dean of faculty at Gallaudet University, Deaflympian, and USADSF Hall of Famer, on her recent appointment as the incoming president of Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf and vice president of RIT. According to a press release put out by the University, Solomon’s tenure begins on August 18, 2025.
Solomon, a past participant in the Deaflympics as a swimmer was inducted into the Deaflympics Hall of Fame in 2020. During the 1993 Deaflympic Games in Sofia, Bulgaria, Solomon amassed a single-Games haul of nine gold medals in swimming. Over two Deaflympics, Solomon picked up a total of 18 medals (13 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze), putting her among the most decorated American female Deaflympians of all time.

Caroline attended Harvard, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and public policy while swimming for the Crimson.
Solomon also holds a masters in biological oceanography from the University of Washington and a doctorate in marine, environmental and estuarine sciences from University of Maryland. As a member of the Gallaudet faculty since 2000, Solomon built a distinguished career as a professor, mentor, and leader, inspiring her students, many of whom also went on to compete in the Deaflympics.
“As a former athlete herself, Dr. Solomon has always understood the discipline, determination, and sense of identity that sports can offer,” Remarked USADSF Vice President Dr. Liza Offreda.
“She brought that same energy to her leadership—pushing for greater equity, access, and visibility for deaf individuals in higher education and athletics alike. Her passion for supporting student-athletes and promoting inclusive excellence has inspired so many, and I have no doubt that she will lead NTID with vision, integrity, and heart.”
Congratulations, Dr. Solomon—your journey continues to empower, and we’re all cheering you on.
