TOKYO - Our First MultiMedal Athlete of the Games

Komazawa Olympic Park Athletic Stadium was the site of a stellar performance from standout  trackster Jarvis Anderson of Texas. He started the day by advancing out of the 110 meter hurdles semifinal. He then switched cleats–jumping straight into the Triple Jump final. Given 6 attempts, he struck Gold on his fifth one, with a 15.28 meter jump.

He went  into the stadium for a doping test, which took a significant amount of time to process. With only five minutes remaining to show up for the 110 meter hurdles final, Anderson returned to the track, with practically no time to warm up or get mentally settled.

It didn’t matter. The 20-year old star shot out of the starting blocks, running neck and neck with Turkey’s Yasin Suzen before fading slightly and securing silver in 14.79 seconds. With that finish, Anderson became the first American at the Tokyo Deaflympics to win multiple medals, an impressive feat considering he earned them back to back in a span of just three hours.

Men’s Volleyball Survives Italy in a Five Set Roller Coaster

Just mere steps away from the track stadium, the U.S. Men’s Volleyball team dove into their third volleyball match of the Deaflympics. They took on Italy, ranked 2nd in the world, and both squads gave the raucous crowd their money’s worth.

Italy struck first, winning the opening two sets 25-22 and 25-17, but the Americans refused to give up. America regrouped and roared back with a 25-20 third set, and kept the momentum going with a narrow 25-22 win in the fourth set. The fifth set was one of chaos and emotions as the U.S. closed out a 15-12 win to lock in the 3-2 victory.

This event truly was a unified group effort. The players had to bring their “A” game and execute strategic plays drawn up by the coaching staff. The U.S. sports psychology team stood behind the coaches and offered encouraging words such as “focus; stay present; keep your spirits up.” For the Americans, this was a game they will remember.

Hoping USA is the luckiest of losers

The Men’s Beach Volleyball USA Team 1, featuring Derek Bradford and Mike Haggerty, slipped into the Lucky Loser round after finishing pool play with a 1-2 record. A lucky loser is a team that didn’t win enough in pool play to qualify outright but gets a second chance because of the tournament structure, similar to how an NFL wildcard team sneaks into the playoffs despite a rough start.

With 22 men’s teams in the field, their overall point performance kept them alive for one more shot at advancing to the playoffs. They’ll hit the sand tomorrow at 9:50 AM, and a win sends them straight into the playoffs.

Bradford and Haggerty now have that window, and tomorrow is their moment to turn it into momentum.
