Chess debuted at the 2019 Winter Deaflympics in Valtellina-Valchiavenna with the men's and women's singles blitz competition and the team event.

At the 2022 ICSD Congress in Vienna, Austria, the Congress voted to shift Chess to the Summer Deaflympics program beginning in 2029.
