USADSF Announces Official US Team Roster and Selection of Duran and Litherland to Take Oaths

SIOUX FALLS, SD — January 27, 2007 — A total of 53 athletes will represent the United States at the 16th Winter Deaflympics in Salt Lake City on February 1-10, 2007. The official roster covers five sports and includes 13 female and 40 male athletes. The sports are alpine skiing, curling (demonstration sport), ice hockey, nordic skiing, and snowboarding.

As the host organization of the 16th Winter Deaflympics, the USA Deaf Sports Federation has selected Ms. Kelley Duran to take the Athlete's Oath on behalf of all competitors and Mr. Ken Litherland to take the Official's Oath on behalf of all officials at the Opening Ceremonies on Saturday evening, the 4th of February.

Ms. Duran is a 2-time Deaflympic athlete in alpine skiing. Mr. Ken Litherland competed in several Winter Deaflympics as a skier and will be one of the officials in alpine skiing competition.

Athlete's Oath

Taking of the oath by a competitor - An athlete shall make an oath on behalf of athletes - every effort must be made to give the oath in International Sign Language. Athlete will gesture the words: “In the name of all competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Winter Deaflympics, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams”.

Official's Oath

Taking of the oath by an official - An official shall make an oath on behalf of officials - every effort must be made to give the oath in International Sign Language. Sports official will gesture the words: “In the name of all the judges and officials, I promise that we shall officiate in these Winter Deaflympics with complete impartiality respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship”.
