ANNOUNCEMENT 2006 World Deaf Cycling Championships in San Francisco, California FREMONT, CA – April 10, 2005 – The 2006 World Deaf Cycling Championships is officially announced to take place on June 19-25, 2006. The weeklong event will be held in San Francisco, California. The championships will host several competitions, ranging from road racing to mountain biking. Approximately 40 international competitors are expected to participate in this prestigious event. “We’ve already received a lot of interest from other countries because of our proximity to locations that makes up for the best venues,” said Robin Horwitz, Chairperson. Currently, the 2006 World Deaf Cycling Championships committee is making preparations to secure several venues well ahead of schedule. The events will be a 100km Road Race, a 1000-meter sprint, an Individual Time Trial and a Points race along with two mountain bike races. New to this Championship is the addition of the General Classification category awarding the winners based on the highest points accumulated from all competitions. Each event will have awards for the top finisher to the 10th place finisher. “It has been a while since the United States has hosted a world deaf championships, and we are eager about the new additions to the cycling program, such as the new 5km prologue and mountain biking races” said Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins, President of USA Deaf Sports Federation. “Not only will the program be expanded, local organizations and schools have been generous with providing lodging, venues, and more,” while declaring their support for the event.
