World Deaf Athletics Championships: Day 2

Joshua Hembrough won the United States its first medal on Tuesday, a silver, after finishing second in the 100 meter finals.  Early in the afternoon he qualified for finals by running an 11.23 and beat that time in the final heat with an 11.13, second only to Mykola Nosenko from Ukraine who ran a 10.92. 

Three United States athletes ran the women’s 100 meter race: Xylonda Collins, Makenzie Hageman, and Mariah Jackson.  Both Xylonda and Makenzie ran shy of qualifying times for finals, running 13.37 and 13.67 respectively.  Mariah qualified for the final heat with a time of 13.10 in the semis, and finished eighth with a 13.25.

Three of our athletes competed in the men’s 400 meter race: Delvin Furlough, Immanuel Neubauer, and Michael Braziel.  Immanuel finished third in the semi-finals with a 51.48, just one place short of advancing.  Michael also finished shy of qualifying for finals after running a 52.67.  Delvin Furlough qualified for finals by winning his heat with a 49.78.

Xylinda Collins and Makenzie Hageman competed in the 400 meter race.  Xylinda qualified for finals, coming in fourth in her heat with a time of 1:00.01.  Makenzie came up short with a 1:05.06. 

John Quatroche II competed in the semi-finals for the 1500, qualifying with a time of 4:11.35.  He scratched out of finals which were held later in the evening.

Emily Russi finished 11th in the finals of the women’s 1500 with a time of 5:52.54.

Darius Flowers finished fifth in the triple jump with a 14.80 meter (48' 6 3/4") jump after five fouls.

Crystle Marion finished in fifth place in the women’s shot put with a throw of 11.59 meters (38' 0 1/4").

Tuesday proved to be a challenging day for our USA team.  Thirteen of our total twenty-eight athletes competed throughout the evening.  Time delays to faulty start-lights caused frustration as competitors worked to stay focused on their respective events.  Wednesday was a rest day for all athletes with competitions resuming on Thursday.
