The San Jose Hellyer Park Velodrome has been selected to host the Sprint and Points Race events during the week of June 18th to 24th, 2006
Fremont, CA - The World Deaf Cycling Championships will be contested in San Francisco Bay area from June 18th to 24th, 2006. We are happy to announce that the San Francisco Bay Area will host this exciting event. Specifically, the San Jose Hellyer Park Velodrome has been selected to host the Sprint and Points Race events during the week of June 18th to 24th, 2006. International deaf cyclists, their families, and friends will travel to San Francisco to participate in the weeklong competition. Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose, CA, has been a popular venue for track racing for over one hundred years.
"When I went down to the Home Depot Center in Carson for the Track
Championships, I immediately had the same vision for the Hellyer Park
Velodrome and World Deaf Cycling Championships. During those 2
evenings, we will have vendors with booths, entertainment, food and
drinks being served to the fans in the grandstands. The racing is
expected to be fast and furious which will be the theme for those 2 nights!" exclaimed Robin Horwitz, the World Deaf Cycling Championships Chairperson.
On Monday June 19, 2006 Match Sprints will begin with competition for
seeding, and elimination riding through the night and into the
semi-final and final rides. At the end of the competition, your new
2006 Sprint World Deaf Champion will be crowned that night. Match
Sprint is an exhilarating event for the athletes and spectators alike,
just as you may have seen in the Olympics.
For Thursday evening June 22, 2006, the Points race will have a fast
and furious feeling to it. Cyclists compete in a qualification heat so
that they may advance to the final later in the evening. They will
accumulate points during their sprints over the course of this long
race. The title of the 2006 Points Race Deaf Champion will go to the
rider who has earned the most accumulated points.
"Both events are spectator friendly" says Robin "and we hope to see
record breaking crowds in San Jose to cheer on the riders and bring out
their best efforts."
The World Deaf Cycling Championships committee will provide a display
of the points standings to keep the audience involved in the race.
Also, an announcer will be provided to keep the fans abreast of what's
happening on the track in sign language and voice. Please mark your
calendars and stay tuned for further information as the event draws
closer.
