The Race of Truth American Takes Home
Gold - 1st One Ever in Deaf Cycling History
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (June 21, 2006) - High up on San
Antonio Valley Road at 2,900 feet, between the Livermore Hills
and Mt. Hamilton, under the scorching California sun, 20 Deaf
cyclists went one by one onto a brutal 20-mile time trial ride as
part of World Deaf Cycling Championships' week-long event. The
purpose of a time trial race is simple: to test who is the
fastest rider over a given distance. Riders do not start
together; instead they go in 1-minute intervals. Therefore, when
they finish at the end, it is not measured by who came in first,
second and so forth, but instead by how well they did based on
the time of their finish. Some people call this kind of race the
most pure form of cycling - it requires grit, determination,
mentality, physicality and so much more for cyclists to succeed
in this event.
And was it ever successful for 25-year-old American cyclist Nick
Schreiber! He was one of the riders to "watch" before the start
of the event, and fans were not disappointed when results
revealed Schreiber had won, and by at least a minute ahead of the
second place finisher, at 50 minutes and 16 seconds. It was also
a first for American Deaf cycling, as there has never been an USA
gold medal finisher before. When asked how he felt about the
race, Schreiber shrugged and said, "It was fine," but when
pressed for more comments, he mentioned that the heat did not
bother him because he was used to training in the Arizona sun (he
is from Tucson). "My goal for the rest of the week is to medal in
all the events I'm participating in, and I would love to see more
of my teammates on the medal stand too! It would be great to have
an USA 1-2-3 finish!" Schreiber is a Category 1 cyclist, and is
considered to be one of the best time trial riders in Arizona. He
broke onto the Deaf cycling scene at the 2001 Deaflympics in
Rome, Italy and earned a silver in the time trial race, but then
took some time off and did not attend the 2004 Deaflympics in
Melbourne, Australia. Now he is back, stronger than ever.
Schreiber is definitely someone all the other cyclists need to
watch in the upcoming events!
Czech Republic's Pavel Pastrnek and Josef Merunka made a very
surprising appearance in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
Pastrnek came in at 51 minutes and 35 seconds, and Merunka was
only 6 seconds behind him. Their teammate, Jan Capek, was one of
the favored riders to place in the top three but he came up
short. The Czech Republic head coach remarked, "I'm happy, but
I'm more relieved that my boys were able to medal! The government
will not sponsor our athletes for the 2009 Deaflympics unless
they medal in this event. Now we have 3 of our cyclists who will
be able to go to Taipei, so I hope our other two cyclists will be
victorious this week."
South Africa's Reyneke (seat problems) and Italy's Paudolfi
(illness) did not finish the race. Overall, it was a great day,
and many people praised the event as a successful one. Tomorrow's
event at Hellyer Velodrome promises to be an exciting one - stay
tuned!
