USADSF President

Greetings World Deaf Cycling Championship Athletes and Supporters,

I enthusiastically welcome you all to the USA for the 2006 World Deaf Cycling Championship, as part of an entourage that strives to raise standards in elite deaf competition. The USA Deaf Sports Federation is excited to host athletes from all over the world in the gorgeous San Francisco Bay Area - a tranquil Mediterranean climate, perfect for arduous races.

Fostering elite competition among deaf and hard of hearing people on an international level has always been USADSF's goal. It has been a while since the USA has hosted a world deaf championship, and we are eager about the new additions to the cycling programs, such as the new 5km prologue race and the mountain biking races. Not only will the program be expanded, local organizations and schools have been generous with providing lodging, venues, and more.

Another wonderful aspect of the World Deaf Cycling Championships is that we all work hard to overcome obstacles as deaf and hard of hearing athletes. There are several barriers a deaf athlete has to face and overcome in order to attain success. Those who succeed in the end are those who had the willpower all along. One story we can all admire is that of Lance Armstrong.

Lance, an avid cyclist, suffered from a form of cancer that overtook his lungs and his brain and, with courage, recovered and came back into the cycling world to win seven straight Tour de Frances. Lance's story is akin to that of a deaf athlete, facing snags in his journey to the top. I can certainly say I am very proud of all of you for participating in this wonderful opportunity. Welcome to the United States of America!

Best wishes for a successful competition,

Bobbie Beth Scoggins President, USA Deaf Sports Federation
